The Savoy - Traditional Luxury hotel in London
One of the world’s most iconic hotels, the Savoy is a jewel that stands on the banks of the river Thames.
Long said to be London’s most famous hotel, the Savoy was originally brought to glory in the 19th century by the legendary hotelier Cesar Ritz. Few hotels in the world impart such a sense of history and occasion as the Savoy, with countless stars including Frank Sinatra, Claude Monet and Sir Winston Churchill, visiting throughout its illustrious past. Keeping it amongst the best hotels in London, The Savoy recently underwent a £200m restoration and was reopened by His Royal Highness Prince Charles in 2011. No details were spared during the work with the full restoration of the afternoon tea room’s famous cupola and the even the Savoy’s private pier on the river Thames getting a makeover.
Amenities
Being one of the best hotels in London, The Savoy contains some of the best amenities too. The American bar has played hosts to stars for over 50 years, Gordon Ramsay’s new adventure ‘the Grill’ is one of the most talked about restaurants in London and the tea shop is one of the most inventive amenity of any hotel in the city.
The Thames Foyer
The Thames Foyer is crowned with a stunning period stained glass cupola that floods its informal dining space with natural light making it memorable place to enjoy breakfast or a traditional English afternoon tea. Very much the focal point of the hotel, the rooms captivating atmosphere is complemented by a live pianist on most days.
Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill
Remaining faithful to its traditional past, the Grill recently underwent an exhaustive restoration as opposed to a complete redesign, and to good effect too. The lacquer panelling exudes class whilst the distressed mirrors and pendulous chandeliers add drama to the historic fabric of the venue. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay heads up the kitchen, producing modern British dishes.
Kaspar’s Seafood Bar & Grill
Perched above the river Thames, Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill is a tribute to Art Deco style with its turquoise banquettes, crystal chandeliers and black and white tiled floors. Like all things Savoy the restaurant contains a quirky nod to its past - a wooden cat sculpture, called ‘Kaspar,’ that was acquired by the hotel in the 1920’s, be sure to ask the staff why.
American Bar
Much an institution amongst London bars, The American Bar has remained as glamorous as when the Savoy first opened. A tuxedoed pianist bounces smooth jazz off the sleek curves of the white bar, its art deco mirrors and the Terry O’Neill portraits on a nightly basis.
Beaufort Bar
The new Beaufort Bar combines a wow factor with excellent drinks. The heavily Art Deco influenced space overflows with opulence; the Alcoves are lined with £38,000’s worth of gold leaf that perfectly complement the exquisite black velvet furnishings and drapes.
Savoy Tea Shop
Reminiscent of the Burlington Arcade, the Savoy Teas shop in the upper foyer is a great and quirky addition to the hotel, enjoyed by all the family. Kids can watch and take part in chocolate making, and adults can craft their own special brand of tea.

Following the hotels recent renovation guests can choose from either Art Deco or traditional Edwardian styles in the majority room categories. Spread over the whole riverfront of the hotels 5th floor, the Royal Suite has one of the best panoramic views over London - from its eight enormous windows guests can see an uninterrupted vista from Canary in the East to Big Ben in the West. The inside of the suite is just as expansive with a marble entrance foyer giving way to an airy interior influenced by English formal gardens. The suite houses a beautiful wood panelled period office, large and comfortable living room and separate dining room big enough for eight. The master bedroom meanwhile has a walk-in wardrobe, his and her bathrooms, a beep soaking tub and steam shower. The suite also includes a kitchen.

Being full to the brim of amenities, special features and cultured history, the Savoy has a number of amenities that would be more than a deserving favourite, however it is the Thames Foyer that stands out. The immaculate room, that combines huge pillar supported ceilings with tiny intricate details, is flooded with light from the historic stained class cupola at its centre.
Perhaps, though, above all else what makes the room so special is the atmosphere, that of well healed guest enjoying London’s best afternoon tea to the serenade of a grand piano – a timeless atmosphere is it imparts the unmistakable feeling of London, and indeed Britain on all guests and passers-by.
